I finally found a game worse than Evergrace. Yes
I see all your jaw's dropping. Let me introduce you all to Unlimited Saga. I kept seeing it in the video store with the big stand-out box and promotions of the game. So
I finally grabbed it... oh why?
Ok maybe 15 minutes of playing wasn't long enough to make a proper review.. so
I put myself through it for about 3 hours longer and here's what I found (stars next to edited paragraphs)
*Graphics: 3/10
I still absolutely HATE cell shading. But I got used to it enough to find some real flashy magic graphics which
don't look TOO bad. Think mischief makers from N64 made even more 2d (like paper with shadows) and maybe.. 10 different sprites 2 for stance and the other 8 for various actions/magic. the only other good thing is the design of the characters.... in the manual.
*Sound: 2/10
No music. a little bit of voice acting. and 'ahh I'm hit' type stuff... atrocious
*Gameplay: 4/10
Its... a text based rpg with spots of fighting.. and wait for it here's the good bit.... on a chessboard type world map. this has got to be the most horrendous attempt at an RPG
I've ever seen. You start off by picking a character (1 of 7... 1 point) and listen to their story (2 points*) and then begin in a 'town' you can do all of your shopping (which is really really dodgy) save, listen to some information at the pub (which is really unhelpful seeing you
don't know jack about anything) and some other specialty stuff before going on your adventure. There are no tutorials on anything whatsoever besides your manual.
let me point out the first irk I have at this point. once you leave YOU CANNOT GO BACK! this game has absolutely NO free-roam. none. zilch. nada.**NB**
I found a little bit, you can choose to do 'side quest' dungeons before going onto the main story in some towns.
Second irk. the chessboard style movement. your piece 'hops' from one spot to another like a maze. You will occasionally see monsters but if you choose to you can ignore them most of the time. should you get into a fight, it is not your HP you have to worry about its your LP... because when
I played I got beaten down to 0 hp.. and more. LP loss seems to be random for both your characters and monsters. Another thing.. you attack on a 'reel' by selecting 5 commands between the characters
(I have no idea how many you can have at one time) and then like a poker machine hit x on the action you want. which is stupid.
there's some screwed up skill grid too probably based off the sphere grid in FFX but
I couldn't (and wouldn't) figure it out. you can't get healing items except for when you're fighting, you have to 'wait' to get healed. 1 more point for diversity of weapons (though
I hardly explored that)
*Replayability: 2/10
1 unless you liked it then it would probably be 10 because of the 7 different characters you can play as. but this is my review so
I'm picking 1 as in 'never again' *note* due to the story I notched this up a point because they ARE good stories even if the rest is bad
*Overall: 3/10 Its hard to imagine a worse RPG (Gameplaywise not storywise) |
