Woohoo. My first N64 review. We got a
N64 for christmas one year and my folks got Mischief Makers for my
sister. I played it as well of course. And here's what I thought.
Graphics: 8/10
Wow. When you look at some of the other titles like Goldeneye, Mario 64
and so on, you think "that's alright for a 64 bit system".
When this game turns on, your stomach does flips at the dazzling display
of light and colour. Seriously, if you get motion sickness I would
advise against playing this game. Sprites are, well kind of cartoonish
but definitely well designed. Scenery leaves a bit to be desired. But
one of the cool things they've done with the game is that it is 2d but
they've kind of warped it to have 3d elements (like some bosses move
into the background or the screen spins around you)
Sound: 6/10
I don't remember much about the music but I think it was a little
repetitive. Sound effects however were ghastly. They were boring,
repetitive and all around nasty. The saving grace in this section is the
voice acting. Ok, so there is very little of it. But Marina's voice is
so cool (sounds a bit like navi from zelda but less annoying).
Gameplay: 10/10
For a platformer, this has to be one of the best in the business. There
is just so much variety in gameplay, whether you're fighting, playing
some sort of game, figuring out a puzzle or just moving through the
level seeing people. Its usually a new thing every level.
The story is a tad weak but not enough to knock off a point. You play as
Marina, a cybernetic girl who's job description I cannot remember
(besides heroine). When a friend of her's, the professor, is kidnapped
she chases after to find herself on a planet full of people that look
like ghosts with arms and legs (it's been a long time since I've played
it I can't remember the names).
Fighting mainly consists of throwing your enemies around, or throwing
things at your enemies, which is incredibly fun. You can also shake
everything you can grab to see if it's hiding any goodies. Boss battles
are very challenging, and you may have to think on how to defeat each
one.
Replayability: 7/10
In the game there's a golden gem in every level, 52 in total. In order
to view the whole ending you need EVERY one of these. Otherwise it will
just play up to a point and end. But other than finding these gems
(though that will take you a while) there is not much else to do.
Overall: 7/10 A badly underrated platformer with some of the most fun
concepts I've found. |
