Live a Live by Squaresoft (as a chirpy voice informs you upon loading the game) is again a different type of RPG. It has not one, but SEVEN heroes to play as, each with their own tale of glory.

Graphics 9/10: I thought they looked great. Admittedly some of the monster sprites were appalling (what is that merchant guy on?) but take a look at the prehistoric guy's "loincloth". It's a lizard, and whenever it gets off a little mosaic appears in its place. I found that hilarious! But really I loved all the scenery and backgrounds and most of the sprites.

Sound 10/10: I NEVER pay much attention to sound or music in games (besides Thief) but these ones are great! Right at this moment I have the boss theme stuck in my head. I really liked the various sounds they assigned to characters and monsters, there's hooting for the prehistoric boy Pogo, beeping for futuristic Cube and so on.

Gameplay 7/10: "WHAT?" is the cry I hear from past players. Yes a 7. I really hate monotonous gameplay and not that there's a lot of it in Live a Live but just enough that it spoilt the time doing it. Like I said at the beginning you can choose between 7 different scenario's to play. Each scenario is set in a different era ranging from prehistoric to western to distant future. Once these have been completed you can use an eighth hero and play another 2 scenario's more. Each scenario has a different sort of style to it. One is much like a Street Fighter game (although battled on a grid turn-based), another comprises of finding things to set traps for an ambush. But I'll warn you now, the Bakamatsu and Near Future chapters are very long and can get tedious after a while. And confusing at times also.

Re-playability: 9/10: With seven different scenario's you shouldn't have any trouble picking the game up again, even after you've finished the whole lot. Even just to replay your favorite scenario again.

Buy or Rent?: Buy it if you still can. If you rent it you will probably spend more money getting it out again just because of nostalgia.

Overall: 8/10 It would be 10 but for those tedious patches within the game
