"Hunter The Reckoning: Wayward" is the first installment of the Hunter series to be released on Playstation 2. I had been waiting to play this for a long time after enjoying the original on Xbox. This installment was much more enjoyable however, read on to find out why.
Graphics: 7/10
They are pretty much the same graphics that have always been used for Hunter. It uses the same pretty red spray when monsters spawn, the same blood, some of the same dazzling edges and the same creepy scenery, although the last has been toned down since the original. Ashcroft still isn't a nice place it seems.
Sound: 9/10
Good stuff! There's kind of an alarm system for when multitudes of hungry monsters are coming built into this game, you know when the bloody awesome music starts belting out. The only reason this is a 9 is because it should be playing all the time. And of course the good old striking, shooting and exploding sounds are back.
Gameplay: 7/10
Naturally, this being a hack/shoot 'em up, the gameplay is going to be slightly repetitive. Not to say continual hacking is wrong, just that this game has been designed so only some monsters can be hacked and some bosses need a little bit of strategy required, which is usually "Dodge all the little guys and focus on the big fella". The gameplay needs more strategy. In the original, I remember playing with 3 other mates and there was continual "Grab that health, Avenger you're about to be swarmed, use your special gun". Only being able to have one additional player helping you dampens the fun a bit, so this version is more of the single player type. But besides all that, this game is ridiculously fun, you no longer need to save up those sub-machine guns or auto shotguns, they're lying around everywhere. Plus your own basic weapons aren't half bad, easy to aim and use, easier to kill with. And you may have noticed my tagline. Yes it is that much easier. Incredibly easy in fact. Which is good if you are frustrated with the impossibility of the original.
Buy/Rent
It's gotta be rent, the game is just not long enough to hold onto it unless you're a big fan. It wouldn't have taken me a whole day to finish if
I had played it for straight hours on end. Rent it a few times to unlock all the goodies or buy it to play it again and again.
Overall:8/10 It is a good game for certain, just occasionally annoying. |
