I can't remember when I first played EVO but I know that it was back in the late 90's or 2000. I finished it last year after I downloaded it again to finally conquer it. Saying that let me point out why I bothered to get it again.
Graphics: 6/10
Not great. Not bad but it's nothing to write a review about. Lol ok enough with the bad jokes. The graphics in this game are pretty cartoonish. Everything looks somewhat cute in a way, mainly the eyes. A few things look nasty like the sharks and hornets but otherwise cuteness is the go. Which isn't really effective in a game of survival. But I'm giving it six out of ten because its coloured well and looks pretty.
Sound: 9/10
I love the music in this game. Everything sort of has the right music for what era you're in. The dinosaur era has those drums and 'caveman grunts' and blends really nicely overall. Sound effects are pretty standard however.
Gameplay: 7/10
This really is a unique game. It plays on the scenario of 'adapt to survive'. In order to adapt you need to find "Evo points" so you can evolve parts of your body and become stronger. To do this you have to bite, claw and ram your enemies and feast on their remains. Or get lucky and find some points lying around.
"Yes you evolve" I hear you saying, "but from what?". Well this game takes place back in
Prehistoria. You start off as a tadpole like creature in the ocean and slowly progress from fish to amphibian eventually all the way to mammal and if you play your cards right, human. You can grow arms and legs, horns, change your height, have 2 legs or 4. The combinations are endless, but it's finding the strongest combination that's the trick.
The story isn't really bad. Gaia has chosen you to lead the path of evolution but there are nasties in the way which you have to fight for her. She can't deal with it because she'd get in trouble with Daddy. Literally
that's very close to what she says.
The reason why I've put this down as a seven however is that it takes a VERY long time to play this game and level up. Because of the restrictions of how far you can evolve, once you reach the strongest evolution for that being there's no hidden bonus. Which means if you're getting your backside whipped by a boss, there's no going away and levelling up and trying again. And the game designers got stingy with EVO points in the later levels where you have more to evolve and it cost's more. And I'm too impatient to be doing that all day in a platformer.
Replayability: 5/10
Nothing much to do after you finally beat the game except go back and do it again. Find any secret evolutions you can (like becoming human) and
that's about it.
Overall: 7/10 A fun game once you get past how long and difficult the path looks at the start. |
