Breath of Fire made by Capcom is the first made of the Breath of Fire series. I looked for this game after playing its sequel (my first
rpg) to see where it began. I wasn't disappointed.
Graphics: 6/10 Alright not so crash hot. Yeah the sprites were awesome and the level designs were good. But! I kinda dislike the battle animations. I think its lazy when the design teams just switch colours on a monster and call it a different name. And they do that frequently in this game. also the display. its not often
I have qualms about this but it shows your current hp BUT NOT OUT OF HOW MUCH!
what's worse is that the boss's hit points are displayed... on a bar. yes
that's right, no scanning or peeking to see hit points, you have a gradually shortening coloured bar to go by. great...
Sound: 7/10 Standard fare. You got your awesome music and your basic swipe stab and magic sounds. not much else to say here.
Gameplay: 10/10 Naturally being an RPG this is where the goods come in. It's going to be hard to explain the story without giving away much spoilers but
I'll say this, its not quite a standard fare beginning. the battle system is pretty standard (why change it? it works so well!) with attack, magic, item, run etc. the layout is like an isometric version of
Lufia, but the characters are onscreen rather than in a little box down the bottom. No mini-games but plenty of
side quests and backtracking to do to make your team stronger and a fair amount of secrets to discover.
Replayability: 5/10 You'll play it again either for the nostalgia or to find all the hidden items/spells around the game. and maybe again for the alternate ending
(I've heard there's two but I've only seen one
Overall: 7/10 a good rpg you can't miss |
