I first played Blackthorne on PC a long, long time ago in like 1995 or sometime around then. I was amazed at how a platformer could be so great. Read on to find out how amazed
Graphics: 8/10
Very cool. Everything looks pretty depressing like it's meant to. For instance the first levels you are in is in a mine. The place is dark and damp and that is visible to the player. Slaves are wearing ragged and torn clothing. And the animations are pretty good too. The intro video is alright if a little jerky. The only irk I have with the graphics is that a little more detail might have gone into items or weaponry.
Sound: 5/10
Not the greatest. Music is alright but it doesn't have much variety. Sound effects can really get on your nerves later on in the game but some are very good indeed. Unfortunately those are few and far between so I will settle for a 5.
Gameplay: 9/10
Remember I said this was a good PLATFORMER? It's very fun indeed. but to get the one bad point out of the way... Jumping. Gaps. The bane of every platformer
doesn't stop here. Timed running jumps are what you need here. But besides that let me explain the battle system. You carry a shotgun which becomes slightly better as you progress through the levels. When facing off against enemy's you 'hide' in the shadows while they are firing and come out and shoot before they hide again. This requires lots of patience. Also if you get too close to them they will melee attack you and knock flying. You have a couple of nifty moves too. You can roll into and area with your gun out and catch them by surprise with a shot or two before they hide.
The rules in this game are interesting too. You cannot jump or run with your gun out. Or climb ladders or pretty much anything except shoot, roll and hide really. Oh and use items. But items (grenades, potions and such) are limited and grenades should only be used for level objects (like sealed doors)
Replayability: 4/10
I can't really see anyone playing this again except for the shootouts which are very fun, and for nostalgia.
Overall: 7/10 A decent game but you might want to turn the sound off |
