I discovered Actraiser when I was posting in a GameFAQ's
board and someone mentioned that it had a relation to Terranigma, one of
my favourite RPG's. I decided I HAD to check it out if that was the
case.
Graphics: 7/10
I'll start off with the bad. By that I mean the menu and the 'Sim' side
of it (more on that later). The graphics in these are pretty basic and
for such a large part in the game that's not a good thing. But on the
other had the side scrolling part the graphics are awesome. your
character looks cool, the backgrounds are wicked and the monsters look
nasty (some of them anyways) the bosses are good too!
Sound: ?/10
I don't remember the sound.. I think I remember it got pretty monotonous
on the sim part of it but the sidescroller bit had different music.
Gameplay: 8/10
This is a really unique game. You start off on a sidescrolling mission
typical to Rastan or Metal Slug. you can jump duck swing your sword and
perform some flashy magic. Unfortunately this is the difficult part of
the game. You can die very easily and there rarely is any health
powerups. Bosses are very nasty and I even had trouble beating them with
save states. The other side of the game is the 'Sim' Side. you feature
as a God looking after his people. Basically you are a cupid looking
angel with bow and arrow and you have to fend off the nasty monsters
from destroying your people's town. you also have to lead them to
developing and learning new skills. to do this sometimes you need to
utilise your powers, such as fire to burn down trees and make space for
houses or rain to water crops and stop famine. In each town (I think
there's 7) the people will have a quest or 2 for you to do and offer up
an.. err offering, which is generally a powerup to help you kill the
demons.
so minus 1 point for the sidescroller difficulty and 1 point for the
very long sim times.
Replayability: 3/10
not great. The reason you'll replay it is to beat that bloody end boss
who is infuriatingly hard. otherwise there's no unlockables or anything
Overall: 7/10 A good unique game that probably shouldn't be passed up |
