Alright then gamers, my review for
Shadowrun for the Xbox360:
GRAPHICS 6/10
The graphics in Shadowrun are impressive, I'll admit, but not the variety
of graphics that will turn heads. It's easy on the eyes, albeit the
cacophony of flashing lights in hectic Attrition matches are a pain. And
it's not like you can walk up to a player model and point out the pixels.
Personally, I think the elven models were a bit sloppy, and the trolls
looked rather goofy, and oafish.
The only impressive visuals were perhaps the summon, and Strangle.
Strangle brought a smile to my face with the growth of crystals and the
impressive physics it had.
The environments were rather drab, though. A couple ledges, some things in
the way. Pfah, I have a ten year old cousin who made these maps look silly
in fifteen minutes.
SOUND 7/10
Now the sounds were rather impressive, in that almost EVERYTHING made a
sound. Every major action you take in-game makes a sound, from the click
of your glider wings, to the slight bass sound that rumbles through a sub
when you cast a spell. Problem is it gets extremely hectic, and fast,
online. All of the spray-and-pray shooters open up with their SMG's, your
screaming and crying and casting spells. People are dying, and casting
spells, causing your sub to bonkers. Although the sounds are cool, and it
IS an FPS, you could sort of filter out little things like the clicks of
boots, for larger and closer sounds. Rather than just jumble up all of the
sound files and blaring them at you through your surround-sound.
GAMEPLAY 6/10
The game REALLY lacks here. It has no storyline beyond the video that the
game initializes at the start, and has no single player campaign. Now, I
realize the purpose of the game was to be a sort of
Counter-strike-with-magic game; but really, you couldn't throw in a
campaign? Anyone who owns this game, look at the data ring on the disc,
and you'll see that Shadowrun takes up like maybe a third of the disc
surface. Lame.
Furthermore, after about four hours of gameplay, I found my self tossing
the controller to the nearest person trying to stop myself from playing
it. It gets EXTREMELY repetitive, and FAST. Twenty minutes in, any silly
bugger can master it, and be bored of it in an hour.
There are four races for you to choose from:
Human (The balanced race.)
Elf (The fast, weak, and regenerating race)
Troll (The "tanks" that take a LOAD of punishment)
Dwarves (The Sneaky bugger who can cast the most magic with their essence
(Wait, aren't elves supposed to be the mages? (Dwarves look silly too)))
The game functions around, killing for money, and completing your
objectives for money.
At the beginning of each match, your newly gathered funds pool; with which
you can buy Weapons, Tech, and Magic. Varying from the cheapest SMG ($500)
to the beefy rocket launcher ($5000).
Note: This seems like a nice range of weapons, but again, it becomes
repetitive when your constantly finding yourself taking an SMG/Shotgun
combo.
One cool feature about the game, is if one of your team-mates is lacking
in funds, you can transfer funds to them in-game through the option "Team"
in the "Buy Menu" at the beginning of a match.
The only thing I thought stood out, was the magic in an FPS game. That's
about it. Although the only spell that really surprised me was summon,
which had some impressive visuals.
The choices become limited extremely quickly. There are not that many
choices for each type of equipment either, after you've played 20 matches.
Equipment are as follows:
Weapons
SMG
RIFLE
SHOTGUN
MINIGUN
KATANA
SNIPER-RIFLE
ROCKETLAUNCHER
Tech
GLIDER
WIRED REFLEXES
ANTIMAGIC GENERATOR
SMARTLINK
ENHANCED VISION
Magic
TREE OF LIFE
STRANGLE
SMOKE
GUST
RESURRECT
TELEPORT
SUMMON
STORYLINE 1/10
WHAT STORYLINE?!
Kidding; there was the video at the beginning...But other than that, who
are these guys trying to kid? I've fluctuated more impressive stories.
Overall 4/10
This is a renter, folks. Do NOT waste $50-$60 on this game, unless you
like repetitive unrelenting chaos in your eye sockets. I love my taste of
chaos now and then, but I wouldn't pay $50 for it.
Get a storyline and a campaign, and possibly some more choices, and maybe
you would have had a classic people would have talked about in the years
to come. But what this is, is something that will be forgotten in two
months. |
