This is the strangest RPG you will ever
play.
Gameplay - 8/10
This is one of the most important factors to any game, it has to be easy
to play. EarthBound does very well in this category. The characters move
at a good speed and don't get stuck anywhere. There is a bike that you
can get to move faster, but it becomes useless pretty quickly. Later in
the game though, you get the ability to teleport. The only thing that
really brings this game down in gameplay is the inventory. Not only is
it stressfully small, but every character has a separate inventory, so
you sometimes have to move things from one character to the other, which
can sometimes be difficult.
Story - 10/10
This is another VITAL part of every video game, and EarthBound doesn't disappoint.
You start as just a regular boy, with slight psychic powers, named Ness,
and in the middle of one night, there is a loud crash near your house.
After going to check out the site, you go back to bed, only to be woken
up AGAIN, this time by your neighbor Poky Minch who lost his brother,
Picky. After you find him, things begin to get strange. A small hero by
the name of Buzz-Buzz comes to warn you of the powerful force known as
Giygas (Giegue or Geeg in Mother 2), and I'll stop there. The game then
develops as Ness and three other equally gifted children, Paula, Jeff,
and Poo, must save the world from Giygas, and someone you wouldn't
expect.
Graphics 8/10
This is the unfortunate part of EarthBound. So many people will look at
the graphics in EarthBound, then compare it to the Final Fantasy series,
or worse, the newer games on the XBOX 360. But something that people
need to keep in mind, is that graphics do NOT make the game, that's why
Atari is still so great (that's right, I SAID IT!). The point is that
while the graphics in EarthBound aren't so great, they aren't supposed
to be. The game is supposed to look cartoony, and have nice effects
along the way. Just play the game, you'll learn to love it.
Music - 8/10
There isn't much to say about this. A lot of the area musics are pretty
good, sometimes funny even, and the battle music isn't bad either. The
best music BY FAR is the Giygas battle music at the end of the game,
which is just another reason to play it.
Humor - 10,000,000,000,000,000/10
THIS is where the game will NEVER disappoint. There are so many things,
small and big, that are just hilarious! So many things are strange, or
stupid, but funny all the same. Some examples are the Franklin Badge,
which blocks lightning (Ben FRANKLIN, get it?), the towns ONEtt, TWOson,
THREEd (or Threek in Mother 2), and FOURside. The main thing that makes
this game funny though, would be how strange it is when compared with
other RPGs. For one thing, the weapons, instead of things such as battle
axes, great swords, mystic armor, and magical powers, you have frying
pans, baseball bats, lucky coins, and psychic abilities. Even the status
ailments are weird, such as nausea, crying, diamondized, and even
homesickness. Plus there are things that you have to see to laugh at,
plus I can't describe without spoiling anything. For those who have
already played and are just reminiscing, Mr. Saturn, and Moonside.
Overall - 10/10
This is a game you have to play to understand, and once you do you will
be laughing the whole way through, or, in rare cases, be emotionally
disturbed for the rest of you life. You just need to break through the
initial things such as graphics and expecting such great music as is
given nowadays. Once you get into the game, you won't want to stop, and
will probably play it more than once. Just one more thing for those
reminiscing: BOinG! ZOOM! |
