Very short, but surprisingly fun.

Review:

Story: 8/10

Not much of a story involved with this one. Goofy and Max are fishing with their neighbor Pete (who is famous for being quite an arrogant troublemaker in case you're not familiar with the old Goof Troop cartoons) when a pirate ship suddenly appears and captures Pete. Even though he probably doesn't deserve it, Goofy and Max, being the good samaritans they are, paddle after the pirate ship and follow it to a secluded island. They step out of their boat, determined to rescue their neighbor from his pirate captors. A lot like something you would expect to see in the cartoons.

Gameplay: 10/10

The gameplay really makes the game in this case. You may choose to play as either Goofy or Max, or if you have a friend over who wants to play, the two of you can team up and tackle the levels in simultaneous gameplay! That's not something you saw a lot of during the SNES era, so that made me smile.

Your character has two inventory slots and cannot carry any more than those two items at a time, but when picking up a new item, the old item filling the inventory slot that is currently in use will be traded for the new item. It will remain in that location until you want to come back and get it. There are a few places in the game where this will cause you to have to back track, but they designers were generous and you don't have to do this very often. The items you find are used to get around special obstacles or else they have a special effect on the enemies. Only one item can be used as a weapon and it only works on weaker enemies.

Defeating the enemies in the game is a concept that is very familiar to any Zelda fan. Pick up object and throw. It's just that simple. But the fun of it is that you can also catch objects in flight. This means that when other enemies toss a catchable object at you (not all projectiles can be caught) you can catch it and throw it back at them. But the enemies can also catch, so sometimes you will toss an object back and forth a couple times before one of you makes contact. There is also a hookshot which allows you to hook objects and draw them toward you from across the room or over gaps.

Finally, the puzzles in this game are pretty rad. The object of the puzzles is to kick a number of blocks onto certain "switch" platforms that will open the door to the next area when they are all covered. But the blocks stay in motion until they come into contact with a wall or another object and some of the blocks will detonate and disappear after a set period of time once they have been kicked. So some of the puzzles will really make you think. No worries if you make a mistake though. Just exit and reenter the room.

In short, the gameplay is extremely simple, but original enough to be great.

Graphics: 10/10

Surprisingly great graphics. They're very cartoony but well drawn and well animated. No complaints here.

Music: 9/10

Once again, surprisingly well done. Nothing I'm going to praise for being extraordinary or exceptional, but definitely well done.

Replay Value: 10/10

Definitely. The game is actually rather short, so when you finish you're not left with that feeling that you're "all goof-trooped out". It's a fun game and its short and sweet. A very successful balance, I thought.
