Congo's Caper
System: SNES
Genre: Side-scrolling Adventure
Score: 9/10
Overview:
In Congo's Caper, you play the role of monkey who is transformed into a prehistorik cave boy. You are on a mission to rescue a lady monkey who has been turned into a cave girl and then kidnapped by some very Saturday Morning Cartoony
villains. There isn't much substance to the story at all, as you've probably deduced, but if you're just looking for fun, then this is for you.
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics of the game are very smooth. If I had to compare it to another game, I would maybe compare it to The Lost Vikings... maybe. Perhaps a bit bitter. It gains through simplicity, being very cartoony and well-polished. I mostly refrained from giving the graphics a 10 for its simplicity and since there are a few enemies in the game (just a few) that look... well... rather
cheezy. It doesn't take away from the game at all though. Not in the least.
Gameplay: 9/10
The gameplay is very fun. Your character walks along (or runs if you hold R) and smacks other cave men around with a club. The cavemen usually fly across the screen and bowl over other cavemen in a comical fashion. You may even whop enemies on the head once, knocking them unconscious, and then roll them around. As soon as you come upon another enemy, a quick smack of the club and you're caveman bowling again! Your character also has two types of jumps: a normal jump and a power jump where your character leaps about three times as high into the air with his body tucked tightly into itself, performing a series of impressive Bruce Lee type flips. Holding down in the middle of one of these flips causes the character to do a nose-dive type maneuver where he dives head first toward the ground dealing damage to whoever happens to be below him. You may also jump and land safely on the heads of your enemies. Jumping off an enemies head will launch you into the air like a
catapult. Very nice.
Also, there yellow diamonds of various sizes that you may collect. The various sizes have different numerical values and if you collect enough to add up to 100 you gain an extra life.
Also, there are large red gems for you to collect. These determine your hit points. You start the game with zero red gems (one hit point) and then for every additional gem you collect, you gain a hit point.
When you max out your red gems, your character's appearance changes. He looks
slightly beefier and he begins to glow. If you have ever watched Dragonball Z, this is what I like to call his Super Saiyan mode. It will remind you very much of that. He moves faster and jumps higher. Your high jumps will literally send you soaring so high that if you leap from the middle of the screen, you'll go flipping upward and out of view for a moment. But that makes it all the more dramatic when you come crashing back down and smash into an enemy. Almost feels like a sneak attack.
You may also pick up items that look like ice cubes which spin a "slot" near the top of the screen, three squares with rapidly changing pictures. If you pick up one of these and three identical pictures line up in the slot, you get a free life.
The game uses passwords to record progress. They are not generated, so you can find them online, if you wish.
The game play is very fun, but I had to give it a -1 for being kind of a short game. Not too short, though. I believe there are a total of 10 zones in the game and each zone has 4 to 5 levels in it. Each zone has its own boss. Also, after zone #1, you get to choose the order you complete the zones, which is kind of neat.
Buy it or Rent it?
If you have mixed feelings about side-scrollers, I would definitely recommend renting it first so you can decide if it's up your alley. But if you tend to enjoy
side-scrollers, I would recommend this to you for sure. It's a very fun game, especially for a quick fix.
Hopefully the ROM will be available soon for people to check it out. I already put up a request, so if you're interested, hang in there. |
