Bahamut Lagoon
System: SNES
Type: Strategy, RPG
An amazing game for any fan of strategy-based rpgs.
Gameplay:
The battles in Bahamut Lagoon are reminiscent of the Fire Emblem series, but definitely have their own style that sets them apart. You manage an army containing all types of fighters: light armour, heavy armour, dark mages, clerics, archers, etc. Like Fire Emblem each character gains exp and levels up individually and each character has a unique set of abilities. The trademark of the game, though, is dragons.
Through the course of the game you will find and adopt young dragons who you lead into battle and command to fight. There are three commands you can set for each dragon (stay close, attack at will, or rest) and dragons gain exp like players. However, when you're not in battle, you can feed the dragons various items you pick up in the game. The dragons have many stats that affect their abilities and every item you feed your dragon has a different effect on its stats. Also, every dragon is different so one dragon may respond differently to an item than another. Depending on what you feed the dragons and how it affects their stats, the dragons can grow into one of many different kinds of dragons.
Only complaint with the gameplay is you don't get to explore towns often enough and sometimes the cut scenes are a bit long. Nice story though. Rating: 9/10
Graphics:
The graphics are very good and the only beef I really had with them is that I don't like the way the dragons look on the battle map. They look kind of cartoonish and silly there, but when they attack or when you feed them, they look very nice. Rating: 9/10
Replay Value:
This game is so incredibly long (in a good way) that replay value isn't something you should have to worry about for a while. But I do think it has replay value since, if you enjoy strategy, the battles are always fun. Not to mention that playing it through a 2nd time would allow you to experiment more with the dragon feeding and maybe get yourself a new type of dragon! Rating: 8/10
