Act Raiser I
System: SNES
Genre: Action Side-Scroller, Strategy, RPG
Rating: 6/10

Review:

Some Pros: The game has two sides to it. For most of the game you will be in control of the angel who will fly all over the map firing its bow at monsters who pour out of portals on the landscape. You must kill the monsters to keep them away from the expanding village/town (and for the exp of course), but you also must tell the villagers how to develop. You map out where their fields will be, where the homes will be, what sorts of industry they will use... they can even acquire new technology such as bridge building and boat building. The towns cannot develop with all the evil creatures about, though, so you must guide the villagers out to the portals and suppress the monsters long enough for them to seal the portal.

Some Cons: I have to complain, however, because the game very much lays out exactly what you are expected to do with the town and you have to go that route and don't have much room for variation. I felt like the game was creating the feeling that I had that power while not actually letting me use it. Also, the feature where towns learn new technologies and industries wasn't used well enough at all. Neither was communication/trade between towns. A lot of good ideas in terms of the town development part of the game, but it really had the potential to let the player have a lot more control over the town and.. well.. it doesn't let the player have it. So I was a bit disappointed.

I didn't like the side-scrolling portion of the game at all. The physics was awkward and the movement of the character was too stiff and robot-like. It seemed that you sort of had to stumble your way through the side-scrolling parts and hope to do well rather than relying on mastery of the character.

Conclusion: In short, a fun game. Complaints include: 1) The game is too short. 2) There are a lot of good ideas in the game that are not expanded on or used near enough. 3) The side scrolling is atrocious.

I haven't played Act Raiser II yet, so I can't give you a comparison.

This game is fun, but has little (if any) replay value for the reasons given above.
