Chrono Trigger

I'm reviewing this game as it is fresh in my memory as I've recently played and completed it. If you're into any RPG at all, this is something you'll definitely want to try out. With great features and in-depth storyline you'll find yourself playing it for hours at a time. As the prequel to Chrono Cross for PS1 which was released 2 or 3 years ago and the prequel to Radical Dreamers, which I believe was made only in Japan. If you liked Chrono Cross, you should try this one out, if you didn't like Chrono Cross, you should still try this game out, many people didn't like Chrono Cross and loved Chrono Trigger. Well, enjoy the game, I know you'll like it.

Sound 10/10

I can't really say much about the music in Chrono Trigger except its awesome. I mean come on, this site plays it every time you log on to it, its just that good. Great music for every different mood of the game, excitement suspense, dreary, I really liked Memories of Green. The sound effects, though decent, wasn't all that good, except for a certain screech, which gave me chills the first time I played it. The music is what made my choice for this, its worth 10/10 without good sfx, although if it did have spectacular sfx, it would be 11/10 and that just doesn't work.
I think the music in it is what makes the game good.

Gameplay 10/10

As you would expect from many earlier rpgs, you have the ATB turn-based style of gameplay. I think Squaresoft did a good job with the battle sequences, letting you fight , "on-screen" and not transfer to a battle screen where everyone is neatly aligned to the right, so some enemies won't/can't attack because of distance or if something is in the way. The best part of battle is using techs. Techs are abilities everyone can use, techs consist of different magic and attacks. Every character has an innate elemental power, soon as you open the menu, you can see what character has what elemental power. Techs are great, you'll most likely be using a lot throughout the game. There are 3 kinds of techs, single, double and triple. Single is executing your own tech against the enemy, Double techs consist of 2 party members, with leveling up and gaining exp, you will eventually learn double techs with other party members, which is more powerful but uses up both your turns and both characters have to be "ready to command" to use double techs. Triple techs are most powerful, but you will see yourself using these less than the others, as with double techs, you have to have all 3 party members "ready to command". I like the idea of being able to walk freely around the world map without annoying random encounters. Which brings me to another point, you will be able to see all your enemies, you will be able to determine if your characters are ready for that specific fight or if you would like to slide on by to another area. I have no problems with the gameplay, this is a very good game, nothing really about it made me think twice about it.

Graphics 9/10

I give this game this score because the graphics are great, the techs are well made and the backgrounds are awesome. The only thing is that compared to other SNES games of that generation, looked a little better in, mainly Tales of Phantasia, Final Fantasy 3, Star Ocean. The character animations were good, I liked that one person could float as he walks. Most of the enemy bosses were created very well, especially the one on the floating mountain. The magic animations were decent, even though they didn't have as much as other games, they were still decent.
Also, I would like to point out that you actually get to see the weapon being used if it is equipped, if your using wood sword, it looks almost brown, if you use red katana, its red. The tech animations were very good though, especially the double and triple techs. The graphics are pretty good, there are just some games that are a little better, but does graphics make the game, I didn't think so.

Storyline 10/10

If you can get over the fact that the main character doesn't ever talk, other than his emotion animations, he's completely silent. You start off with Chrono, a boy from Truce that because of a series of events that will unfold, will end up saving the world, you know that old chestnut. Along the way you will meet up with different people from different "places". You will literally change peoples lives as well as be a great influence on time itself. All of the game is in the same place,...just not the same time. You will travel over continents, oceans and even time itself. Time plays a major role in this game. When you go somewhere in the past and change something there, it will also change in the future. You will have to remember that. Although this game is pretty linear, you can go off to gain levels and get money and items for your quest and you have many side-quests towards the end to let you stray from the main story for a while. Everything becomes intertwined, but comes together perfectly the more you progress. The story will keep you captivated and you'll find yourself sitting in front of your TV/computer for hours trying to complete this game. The storyline is pretty good, its something not ever really used before, not the usual save the princess type idea. Everyone has a back story and has great in-depth stories about them. I would say its one of the better storylines for an rpg, but that's Squaresoft for you, they usually always have great games.

Replay Value 8/10

After the time it takes you to complete this game all the way, as well as the side quests, which shouldn't take you very long, you will wait for a long long while before this game ends up in your SNES anytime soon. Although it is a great game, but it doesn't have much to say about secrets in it. You can complete the game with 100% or close, on the first time around. There isn't anything real hard to do and there is no Ozma or Omega to have fun with in the end. Its worth playing more than once, just for the fact it is a good game. I've played and completed this game countless times just because its one of my favorites.

Overall Score 10/10

Great game, a "must play". I give it two thumbs up. If your a rpg fan and you haven't played this game. You definitely should. Its one of the better SNES rpgs, well, one of the best rpgs all together, in my opinion. Great music, great gameplay, awesome storyline, good graphics, you don't wanna miss out on this title. I just hope many agree with me on this one.
