Super Paper Mario
System: Wii
Genre: RPG
Difficulty: Easy
Score: 8/10
Super Paper Mario is the sixth piece of the Mario RPG series, even if it
is much different than the other five. This is definately not a bad thing,
however. Sure, they could have improved the RPG element a bit, but the
game overall is a great success and a welcome addition to the Mario RPGs.
Graphics (7/10):
Well, the graphics have been just about the same in the Paper Mario series
even since Paper Mario on the N64. With the addition of the 3D space in
this particular game, it's still not much of an improvement. Just the same
graphics, but flipped to the side. Not real impressive or anything, but it
gets the job done. It flows well, reinforces the paper aspect, and saying
it's like Paper Mario 64 isn't an insult. The colors have always been
vibrant, the animations smooth and slick, and overall really impressive.
Sounds (9/10) :
Great sound and music. I was actually humming through a majority of the
game. The main city songs are catchy, and I especially liked the theme for
the first world. I was especially impressed with the music in 6-2 after a
certain point. It took a different tone with the series than I had heard
before, and instilled a certain kind of terror. The music did it's job
very well. The only thing I have to complain about is the music in one or
two of the worlds that fit the theme of the world almost too well. Too bad
I didn't enjoy the theme of the worlds. That's just one opinion though.
Storyline (9/10) :
This isn't any sort of epic RPG like Final Fantasy that has a deep,
intertwining mess of a story. It has the basic outline of a hero saving
the world from destruction. The difference with this game is the way it
presents that scenario. The Mario RPGs have always been really silly and
eliminated any sense of epiness you might come across a quarter-second
later. This game changes that a bit. It's still incredibly corny and
pretty funny, but as the game progresses, it holds back on the funny and
actually lets a little epicness through, which it handled very well.
Romance, hopelessness, betrayal, sacrifice... it all comes together in the
end. It also got a good mark because it included my favorite character as
a good part of it.
Gameplay (8/10) :
The style of this game is unlike any other game I can think of. It's a
sidescrolling action adventure game, but with RPG elements like HP,
strength and defence. Any of the four characters can jump on enemies to
hurt them, use certain Pixls (basically abilities that are usable by all
four characters), or even use their own abilities. You can level up by
defeating enemies, and earn extra points by shaking the controller upon
hitting them, causing a stylish jump. You use coins to buy different kinds
of items and a number of different things. It's an RPG all around, but
with the old jump-on-'em Mario kinda action from the sidescrollers.
Adding onto the game, there is also a fairly high amount of puzzle
solving, especially using Mario's ability to flip between 2D and 3D
absolutely anywhere. You'll be using the different character's techniques
and abilities throughout the entire game to solve puzzles, some harder
than others, although the game keeps alot of focus on Mario's flipping
ability.
Finally, there are a few secrets to the game including secret Pixls and
dungeons. The game keeps mostly to the little secrets though, including
hidden items, coins, and other little things. The only thing that is
really left out of the traditional RPG is equipment. You're solely reliant
on levelling up in this one.
Replayability (8/10) :
The game is very fun, so I'll probably be playing it again soon. The story
has many funny scenes that'll keep me laughing. The gameplay is hard to
get sick of, and the story is good to go through a second time due to some
things that happen early on in the story that aren't meant to be
understood until later on. The only thing I might get sick of is that a
small few of the puzzles are pretty annoying to solve.
Overall (8/10) :
Very worth the money spent. Fun gameplay, cool music, interesting and
funny storyline, there's not really much else to look for in a good game. |
