Ah, Resident Evil. For years this has been the game that came to mind when someone mentioned survival-horror games. All of those long years waiting for those clunky controls to go away have finally paid off! This game has reinvented the Resident Evil series and it set a new standard for survival-horror games. Now let's get on with the review.

Gameplay - 9
Remember hating the Resident Evil series cause you couldn't move and died from a mob of zombies or maybe because you couldn't aim very well? That's when Capcom realized this and stepped up the gameplay. This game is very fun and can leave you in amazement after a boss fight, or running from creatures of the night. Whipping out a shotgun and blasting an enemies head off is very satisfying and usually leads to a one-hit kill. Sniping an enemy from a distance has been redone to fit today's sniping standards. (So no more awkward sniping like in Code Veronica) Quite a few new weapons have been added in this game and you get money to buy and upgrade them for some small RPG-type elements. Capcom couldn't have done a better job.

Story - 7.5
Well, the story is alright. It gets the job done and you'll love watching the intense story scenes later in the game. The story starts with an ex-cop named Leon S. Kennedy (Past Resident Evil fans may remember him from Resident Evil 2) going to some place in Europe. The President's daughter was captured and he was hired to find and bring her back safely. A couple of guys drive him right outside a village so Leon can go investigate a house. When Leon gets inside he asks a man if he's seen the president's daughter. The man starts yelling in a foreign tongue and walks away...to grab an axe and try to kill Leon. You kill the man and look outside to see a truck slam in to the car outside the village, thus pushing it off a cliff. That's where it start's going downhill for Leon.

Sound - 9
Nice sound effects from the roaring of the chainsaws to the bang of a boomstick it all fits very well. The sound is all portrayed very well through a surround sound system but it all sounds great with normal TV speakers too. There wasn't much ambience in the game so that's why it only got a 9.

Variety - 9.5
This game is very good in variety. There's boss fight's, shooting galleries, Some parts when you have to suddenly dodge an attack by pressing two buttons, run from a boulder that's about to crush you, protecting the president's daughter and a lot more. The bosses are also nicely varied to a battle with a giant fish that you have to use harpoons to kill, to a cage fight with a creature that will attack out of nowhere, this game always has new things to make it feel like a fresh experience.

Replayability - 8.5
There are unlockables which add a bit of replayability, but the best thing is that when you beat the game you can play it again with all the weapons and money you previously had. Trying to upgrade all of your weapons to the maximum is what had me coming back for more. There are alternate costumes and harder difficulties to boost the replayability also.

Overall - 9
This game really did reinvent the survival-horror genre in games. Many things were done right but there was one thing that was missing from this package. There were about 3 parts in the game where it has something "jump" out at you. I was slightly disappointed with that because they were common in the past and it was this games only downfall. However, if you're into survival-horror games then I recommend it 100% If you're a casual gamer then rent it because this is truly a game of near perfection.
