This is one game that really stood out
from the crowded FPS genre. With a powerful map editor to an outstanding
single player this game uses every ounce of the X-box's power. Beautiful
graphics quick load times make the package even better. Wow, this game
sounds great and I haven't even begun the review! I guess you'll know
what to expect then
Gameplay - 9.5
The gameplay in Farcry is one of it's strong points. The control setup
is like any other First-person shooter on the market and much of the
game makes it feel like any standard shooter. There is so much fun to be
had in the single-player mode that you will not be disappointed. It
starts to get a little boring using stealth so much about halfway
through the game but then something happens and you get
"Un-natural" powers. You can bust open gates, uppercut an
enemy with so much strength that they'll go flying into the air, Break
off a stationary turret and carry it around with you, and there's a few
other nifty tricks to use. The map editor is easy to learn also but I
will go over that later in the review.
Story - 8.5
For a shooting game this game has a D*mn fine story. From betrayal to
being captured to hunting down the man who sets you up it is all good.
I'll brief you on the beginning of the story for you.
A man named Jack got into some bad business with a higher up mob boss's
son so he left the country to sell boats. A girl knew of him and wanted
to take some pictures of an old battlefield. In return she'll pay him
and says she's wealthy. (Who could refuse?) They drove there on a boat
and when they got there the girl borrows a sea-do and Jack eventually
falls asleep. However he awakens soon when a chopper is flying directly
above him. It flies away and comes back firing on him and forces Jack to
jump overboard. And this is where you take control and begin the game.
This is only the beginning of the story but the rest just gets better
and better.
Sound - 10.0
Excellent sound effects were used in this game. From the Sniper Rifles,
to the birds chirping in the trees and even the guards arguing and
dissing each other's mom's (Seriously...it happened) the sound effects
were beautifully done through my Dolby Digital surround sound. If you
don't have surround sound then this game would be a reason to get it.
The Mapmaker - 9.0
This is a feature anyone can pick up and mess around with. The ONLY
drawback of this is you can't have indoor levels. You have to have them
outside. You can however place over 5 types of vehicles, some huts or a
few small military buildings, trees, guns, and many more things. This
mapmaker is basically limited to your imagination.
Variety - 9.0
Another great aspect of Farcry: Instincts is it's variety. From sneaking
around in the outside jungle, to driving an atv while being chased by a
chopper to being in an all out firefight with the enemies. It's all
good. The multi-player in this game is great also. There are only four
modes but they all have something that sets them apart from one-another.
The arena's you start with (Not including ones made with the mapmaker)
are decent battlegrounds and offer things that can't be done in the
mapmaker. The story also has allot of variety and it will always keep you
guessing.
Replayability - 8.5
The single-player mode doesn't have a lot going for it with replayability,
yet it did do a nice job of trying. There a lot of parts in the game
where two or even 3 paths are available to take. This is all great but
the real replayability is in the multi-player (Including online play)
and the mapmaker.
Overall - 9.5
This is a game that if you like First-person shooters, you have to pick
this up. If you don't like these types of games but you like stealth
games then I recommend at least renting it. I really liked this game so
that's why I think it deserves a 9.5 |
