One frustrating thing about God of War is that it seems to
contain a finite number of enemies. The result is that there
is only a finite amount of experience available for the
player to purchase upgrades to Kratos's awesome
techniques.... but.... there is one loophole in the game
that can seriously beef up Kratos and allow you to put those
precious blood orbs to better use. I'm not going to lie...
it's a tedious process... as character training tends to
be... but well worth it if you put in the time.
Where do I go?
There is only one place in this game where you can do this.
It's on the "Road to Athens" level when Ares first
appears and immediately after Kratos speaks to the
apparition of the oracle. After saving the game at the cliff
overlooking the battlefield (where Ares is standing), head
left and you eventually enter the room where Ares throws a
fireball and caves you inside with two Minotaurs. This is
where you want to be.
What's the trick?
This all you need to know... you are now in the only room in
the game with enemies that endlessly respawn. There is a
chest in this room with a never-ending supply of mana orbs.
The Minotaurs in this room stop awarding you experience for
killing them... BUT... the game still awards you blood orbs
for combo bonuses. I think you see where this is going.
What to do:
Every time a Minotaur respawns, approach it and block. When
there is an opening in the Minotaur's defenses for an
attack, quickly use Apollo's Ascension to launch the
Minotaur into the air and follow up with Apollo's Offensive.
Usually, this will score you a combo of 10 or 11 hits. The
game will promptly award you with +2 blood orbs as a bonus
for your combo move. The Minotaur is not dead yet though...
land this combo on the Minotaur four times. Each time
the Minotaur will fall onto its back (if you ever need to
refill your mana... go grab the chest while the Minotaur is
still on his back). After the fourth time you land this
combo and before the Minotaur is able to get back on his
feet, quickly use Poseidon's Rage. This should cause the
fatality icon to appear over the Minotaur's head (if not,
you may need to use Poseidon's Rage twice). Quickly place
the finishing move on the Minotaur. If your combo count is
over 12 hits when the Minotaur dies, you should receive +20
orbs. If you pull off all of these moves successfully, this
should be the result:
Apollo's Ascension + Apollo's Offensive = +2 orbs
Apollo's Ascension + Apollo's Offensive = +2 orbs
Apollo's Ascension + Apollo's Offensive = +2 orbs
Apollo's Ascension + Apollo's Offensive = +2 orbs
Poseidon's Rage + Fatality = +20 orbs.
Total: 28 orbs per Minotaur.
Note: The game can sometimes be very fickle when
choosing whether or not it counts a combo as
"continuous" and so its likely that you won't
always execute this perfectly. But this should work most of
the time.
You may wish to try other techniques to milk more
experience. It's possible to get 30 orbs per Minotaur, but
it's very risky and you may end up losing your +20 orb bonus
for the Minotaur altogether by killing it too soon.
Killing the Minotaur with a 10 hit combo only awards you
with +2 orbs. You need to kill it with 12 hits or over to
receive +20. Also, don't try to go for extremely high combos
like 40 and 50 hits... while they are possible, you will
still only get +20 orbs.
This is a very tedious process since upgrades cost quite a
bit... but nowhere else in the game will you receive this
opportunity. Before you leave the room, be sure to milk this
for all that it's worth.
Unfortunately, there is no way to save your progress in this
room and come back later. It has to be done in one session.
You can spend your orbs on whatever you choose, but your
best option is probably to upgrade your blades of chaos
first. Why? Because upgrading your magic skills also causes
them to consume more mana, and by this point you would not
have collected enough Phoenix Feathers to compensate for the
upgrade. The move will be more powerful, but you won't be
able to use it as often. In the long run, this makes the
technique less efficient and less effective. Blades of Chaos
cost nothing and are used much more often than your special
skills.
Hopefully this saves you some blood orbs to use on your
other techniques later! Happy Minotaur killing!
