Chapter 5
The next few days went by
rather slowly, Miyako spent her time reading in the main garden. She had
also discovered that training in combat could be fun when she spared with
Kyohei. Whom proved to be an excellent warrior. Reoh had yet to send a
reply, this put the girl on edge for some reason although everything did
lately especially the wind. The days were mildly cool, perfect weather for
autumn. Miyako expected for something to happen before she left, she could
feel it in her very bones.
The wind was as restless as Miyako,
or at least it seemed so. Kyohei and Miyako’s talk had not been mentioned. It
had been something of a secret and silent promise that they would not speak of
it. For it seemed tat the words said would not hold as deep a meaning if spoken
again, and so they weren’t.
Miyako’s father seemed to have
taken little notice that his daughter had been training with Kyohei instead of
him, or perhaps he found it a better arrangement. Marriage, no Kakara did not
like the thought marring at such a young age as 14. But he would like Miyako to
have someone she was close to. He feared his daughter would build up walls
around her and never let anyone in otherwise.
Nana, Miyako’s nursemaid, made no
effort to hide what she thought of what was happening. Her eyes held laughter
when she teased the girl about her training sessions with Kyohei. She would say,
while stifling giggles, “So how goes it with young Kyohei-san? I hear love
bells.” She said it in a sing song voice only helping the already growing blush
on the girl’s face. Miyako made much effort to avoid Nana when she was in such a
mood to tease her like that.
By no means did Miyako think of
Kyohei in a romantic sense. He was a good friend, and already they had formed a
strong unspoken bond. They had a silent understanding of each other, they were
in similar positions, and had similar desires. They both wanted their own lives.
Miyako sat entwined between the
branches of the small sakura tree in the main garden. Her head was deep within a
book, the cover of it held the emblem of the Lioness, Alanna of Tredbound. It
was one of the few books left about Tortall, it was actually very recently
written. It told of the first lady knight’s adventures and many facts about the
king’s champion. It had been a few years since the book had been published, but
Miyako had no doubt that facts were liable. She absentmindedly ran her fingers
over the spine of the book.
Her reading was abruptly stopped
by the oh so familiar snapping of a twig. ‘Please not him...please not him.” she
silently pleaded. Luck was obviously having some sick laugh on her unhappiness.
As she lowered her book, her eyes met with the malicious green ones of Takenaga
Oda. “How did you get into the first branch house?” she asked reluctantly, did
she really want to know the answer. Takenaga gave her a catlike grin as he
approached the tree.
“Why I was in a meeting with
Kakara-san.” he replied nonchalantly. A meeting with her father, but why?
Takenaga saw a puzzle look cross the girl’s face and smiled.”Your father has
been searching for someone to accompany you on your visit to the city, and I
volunteered. Takenaga continued to grin, while a look of horror grew on Miyako’s
face. How could this happen! Of all people why must it be this young man be the
one to accompany her to the city! Had her father gone mad? Was it only she who
could see the true person of who this man really was? “I have buisness in the
city as well so your father happily agreed. I hope our trip together will be a
pleasant one my beautiful Miyako-san.” Miyako’s skin crawled, she hoped that
Kyoheir might make the trip more bearable.
“I do not want you to come.”
Miyako replied weakly. Without thinking she had climbed down from the tree,
leaving her book laying on one of the branches.
“Your words hurt me so Miyako-san.”
said the boy. He walked closer to Miyako, his vast height apparent when compared
to Miyako’s menial 5'6" As he drew close his grin did nothing but increase.
“Tell me why is it you do not want me to accompany you?”
“...” Silence. Miyako knew that
Takenaga would like nothing more than for her to say she feared him, that’s what
she thought. So silence was the only thing the girl could think of.
“I see, very well then. I look forward of us seeing more of each other.” He
said, obviously amused at all of this. He walked closer, and whispered in
Miyako’s ear, “Until next we meet, my Miyako-san.”
Run. That was the only real
command the girls brain would give. Without even bothering to retrieve her book,
she bolted in the house, leaving the vicious boy by himself.
