Chapter 5: Truth
Calmar, Clint and Amy
hurried up the staircase, hoping Maria would be all right. When they reached the
twentieth floor they saw the stairs leading up had been smashed, Thomas made
sure they had to go through to the other stairwell. They opened the door and
were blinded by the light coming through the windows. The room was packed with
desks, someone clearly put them in there for cover. A person was sitting on one
of the desks near a window, they heard a soft chuckle.
"I was hoping you'd come pinky, I have a score to settle
with you." Daniel glared up at them, an cruel grin on his face.
"Who the hell do you think you're calling pinky?!"
Amy shouted at him. "I've got a score to settle too, you'll regret ever
making fun of women hunters you sexist piece of-"
"Whoa there pinky, calm down. It's not a good idea going
into battle when you're not able to think clearly."
"If you don't stop calling me pinky... Ohh... Clint,
Calmar, I'll deal with this peon, you head on up."
"But..." Calmar started, but Clint grabbed his
shoulder.
"Trust me, Amy will be fine. Only an idiot would make her
mad, the last guy that did ended up with a broken jaw." Clint whispered to
him.
"Yeah... she seems to be quite a handful. Lets go."
Calmar said, walking over to the other staircase with Clint and not giving it
another thought.
"Well, shall we?" Amy said, glaring at Daniel
He laughed, hopping off the desk. "What do you see in
him? He's a killer, remember?"
"What are you on about now?"
"Don't give me that, what's so interesting about Calmar?
You came here with him for a reason."
"I only came to finish what I started with you back in
that factory!"
"True, but there's something else. You believe him when
he says it was an accident, but nobody else does. Why is that?"
"He told me what happened... it was a mistake, that's
all."
Daniel laughed again, "You foolish girl... there was no
mistake! Vincent was murdered, plain and simple!"
"Enough talk, lets go!" Amy charged at him.
"Fool." Daniel held up his shotgun and fired. Amy
dashed behind a desk just in time, it took most of the bullets. He shot the desk
again, Amy jumped on top of it and then straight at Daniel, punching him in the
face. He stumbled backwards a couple steps and then rushed forward, striking Amy
in the ribs with the back of his left hand. She screamed, and was knocked
halfway across the room by the force of his blow.
"What... the..." she coughed, laying on the floor.
"I thought you lost that arm..."
"I did." Daniel said, holding up his left arm
"I had a robotic one put in, that's why Thomas had this little event happen
now instead of a week ago. He's quite a man... better than Vincent ever
was."
"What are you talking about? You're glad Calmar killed
him?" Amy asked, trying to stand.
"I suppose... I could tell you. You're going to die
anyway, so it won't matter." Daniel chuckled "It was no accident, what
happened that day. Calmar put three real bullets in his back, but only thanks to
my cunning!"
"What?"
"I was tired of dealing with Vincent, he was always
acting so high and mighty. Thomas was always in his brother's shadow. They never
got along anyway, so I did him a favor. When we all came to this tower, I was
planning on killing him anyway, Calmar just gave me a hand, even though he
didn't realize it. After I had found the documents we went in there for I was
searching the corridors when I came across Calmar, he hadn't noticed me so I
snuck up behind him and gave him a good strike on the head. I took his guns and
put live ammo into both of them, then I woke him up from a distance. I made sure
he was headed in Vincent's direction and got ahead of him. I handed the
documents to Vincent, claiming to be exhausted from so many bots, and that a
runner had a better chance to escape with them. He bought it, the fool, and ran
past the corridor that Calmar was just coming out of. Calmar noticed what he was
carrying and chased after him, shooting him in the back with what he thought
were stunners. He ran right by without a second glance! It was hilarious! He
never knew that Vincent was dead until the next day!" Daniel was bent over
laughing, but Amy was in shock.
"You... how could you?!"
"Oh please, nobody cared, Thomas only swore revenge out
of pride. He was just as glad that his brother was out of the picture!"
"You told him all this and he was fine with it?"
"Of course not, why bother with such petty details?"
"Petty... details? You sick...!" Amy tore across the
room at him, the throbbing pain in her side minimized by a rush of adrenaline
and pure rage. Before Daniel could raise his shotgun an inch Amy was in front of
him and had punched him in the face again, knocking him back a few steps.
"Same as last time, how unorgi-" Daniel was cut
short by Amy, who had dashed up once again and elbowed him in the stomach. He
choked, and felt himself being thrown across the room. He landed hard on one of
the desks, breaking it in half. His shotgun landed on the floor between them.
"Give up, or do I have to finish you off?" Amy
asked, a hint of bloodlust in her voice.
Daniel wiped the blood from his mouth and laughed "Sorry
pinky, I won't stop until I'm dead." he rolled off the desk and made a
sprint for the shotgun.
"Fine." Amy followed suit, they grabbed the gun
simultaneously, each struggling to get it away from the other.
"You can't beat my new arm..." Daniel said, slowly
getting the shotgun to aim at her.
Amy grinned, "Did you remember your special armor
today?"
"Special ar-" Amy brought her left knee up fast and
Daniel let out a cry of pain, releasing the shotgun.
"Nope." Amy took aim at him, he was stumbling around
in immeasurable pain thanks to Amy's sneak attack. "Cheap shots suck, don't
they? That was for women hunters everywhere, and this one's for all the crap you
did seven years ago!" Amy shot him once in the back and Daniel fell to the
ground, dead. "See how it feels? Scum."
The door leading downstairs swung open, Maria stood outside,
looking exhausted. "Amy!" she shouted, running into the room.
"What... what did you do?!" she stared at Daniel's corpse.
"After everything he did, he had it coming. Come on, we
have to catch up with Calmar and stop him!" Amy said, running over to the
stairs.
"Stop him? Ah... wait up Amy!" Maria said, following
as quickly as she could. On the way up, Amy told her what Daniel had said. As
they reached the fortieth floor they heard a deafening roar of gunfire, Amy
pounded on the door but it wouldn't budge. The gunfire stopped, they heard
someone shout, but couldn't understand what he said. A bullet came though the
door, barely missing Maria. "Whaaaa!" she screamed, running back down
a few steps, pulling Amy with her. A couple more bullets flew through the door,
before the constant gunfire continued.
"What now?" Amy wondered
"We wait... it's all we can do." Maria said
quietly... she may not have known what the person shouted before the bullets
started coming through the door, but she did know who's voice it was. Muffled or
not, she was sure it was Clint. Because of the noise, neither Maria or Amy heard
the footsteps coming from below them.
